Each one of our podcasts are recorded, mixed, and mastered in full CD quality. We used to transfer it to MP3 because it was the most common compressed audio format. The problem with MP3 is it degrades sound quality, even at 128. I found that an MP4 (aka AAC file) at 128 sounds much closer to CD quality and the sound is more pleasing (voice, music, and sound effects sound clearer and brighter). If you have an ipod, you can hear The Sci-Fi and Fantasy Podcast in crystal clear digital sound. Some other players can also play MP4s but not many. If you download the podcast through itunes, and your player won’t play MP4s you can use itunes to convert the podcast to mp3, but I suggest that if you do that, encode the MP3 at 160 or higher to get close to the sound we originally intended. Our podcast sounds awesome through those Bose speakers or a good set of headphones!
Some of our earlier shows (the ones recorded in ‘05) were produced originally in the MP3 domain, but the rest will be remastered in MP4 format.
